Un/fold·ings

Project type

Maroš Elperyn’s Master’s project, *Un/fold·ings*, explores the intersection of liturgy, movement, and performance through an applied theatre approach. Designed for the Českobratrská evangelická church community, the project aims to reanimate the connection between intellectual and physical dimensions of spirituality, addressing the marginalisation of the body in traditional expressions of faith. The project is divided into two phases and targets regular participants in church activities across all age groups. Some members, possessing formal training in the performing arts, will play a dual role as workshop facilitators and later as performers. The first, intensive phase will take place in Brno, Czechia. Alongside a series of workshops aimed at developing a participatory movement ritual inspired by classical liturgy, this phase will also include theoretical research and the collection of movement material. These foundational elements will not only inform the ritual itself but also serve as a basis for the second phase. This process seeks to transform the liturgy into a contemporary, embodied experience while grounding the project's methodology in both practical and academic insights. The second phase will build directly on the outcomes of the first. Beginning in Brno, it will focus on adapting the participatory ritual into a performative presentation suitable for black-box theatre, creating a dialogue between sacred and theatrical spaces. This exploration will then continue in Versio, Switzerland, where the work will deepen within a smaller, intimate creative group. The project will culminate in a two-part presentation. The first part will showcase the work-in-progress from the initial phase, including a glimpse of the resulting participatory ritual. The second part will feature a performative presentation from the second phase, offering an evolved interpretation of the themes and forms developed throughout the project. By integrating members of the church community into the creative and performative processes, the project fosters a sense of shared belonging within a searching and supportive community. Ultimately, *Un/fold·ings* bridges the gap between faith and embodiment, presenting sacred spaces as dynamic arenas for interdisciplinary collaboration and renewal.

The title "Un/fold·ings" plays with multiple layers of meaning, emphasizing both storytelling and the physical act of unfolding or revealing. The slash ( / ) suggests duality or choice—something both folded and unfolded—while the dot ( · ) represents a point of connection or a moment of transformation. The term "unfold" resonates with the embodied process of opening, stretching, and expressing, as well as the narrative act of telling a story. This title bridges the physical and symbolic, creating space for exploration of movement, revelation, and the interplay between the corporeal and the conceptual in ritual and performance.
